Township of Springwater / January 10, 2018 – Shortly after 07:40 am on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, Springwater Fire & Emergency Services responded to a report of a residential structure fire on Baseline Road in Springwater. A passerby noticed smoke coming from the residence’s roof and called 911.

Deputy Fire Chief Jeff French was the first on-scene and noticed a vehicle in the driveway, but no occupants waiting outside. He made entry into the premises, and woke the sleeping sole occupant. The occupant and his four (4) dogs were evacuated from the residence safely.

Firefighters from Stations 3, 4 and 5 attended the scene and upon arrival, made an aggressive interior attack and contained the fire to the attic, though water and smoke damage occurred.

Smoke alarms were present and working, but had not alerted the homeowner, as the fire had not penetrated the ceiling between the attic and main floor when firefighters first arrived.

“Thank you to the quick thinking motorist who contacted 911, Deputy Chief French for his actions in alerting the occupant and the hard work of crews from all stations,” says Fire Chief Ian Gavet. “A quick response, combined with well-trained firefighters were key to this successful operation.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, however is not deemed suspicious.
