The Township of Springwater joins municipalities around the world in opening the doors to cultural and heritage buildings as part of Doors Open. Join us on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. as the Township of Springwater's Cultural and Heritage Advisory Committee proudly showcases the Hillsdale Lock-Up, a site of cultural and historical significance.
Doors Open is an annual event celebrated across Ontario, offering individuals the opportunity to explore locations that hold historical, architectural, natural, or cultural importance. This year, Springwater invites you to discover the fascinating history of Hillsdale through a visit to its historic lock-up.
“As we open the doors to the Hillsdale Lock-Up for this year's Doors Open event, we invite not just residents of Springwater, but visitors from all over to delve into our rich local history,” said Hale Mahon, Committee Chair. “This unique structure provides an incredible view into the past, fostering an appreciation for the heritage that has shaped what our region looks like today."
Constructed in 1906, this building initially served as a justice administration center and a temporary holding facility for offenders within the Medonte Township and Hillsdale jurisdictions. By the 1920s, it evolved into a vibrant community hub, functioning as a shelter for transients, a meeting venue, an electoral polling station, and a storage site.
This year, there are many different heritage sites in Simcoe County participating in Doors Open. Visit www.doorsopenontario.on.ca to learn more and view participating heritage sites.
