The Mayor of the Township of Springwater will assume "strong mayor powers and duties" as outlined in Part VI.1 of the Municipal Act, effective May 1, 2025.
These powers include the authority to:
- Appoint the Town’s Chief Administrative Officer
- Determine the organizational structure
- Hire, dismiss or exercise any other prescribed employment powers with respect to any division head or the head of any other part of the organizational structure
- Create committees of Council, assign their functions and appoint the chairs and vice-chairs of committees of Council
- Propose the Township’s budget subject to Council amendments, Mayoral veto and a Council override process
- Veto certain by-laws if the Mayor believes all or part of the by-law could interfere with a Provincial Priority
- Submit matters for Council's consideration if the Mayor believes it will advance a prescribed Provincial Priority
- Direct Township staff in writing
The Mayor has the option to delegate specific administrative powers and duties. These must be exercised in writing and will be publicly accessible, in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. 2025 Mayor Proposed By-laws
If the Mayor is of the opinion that a by-law could potentially advance a prescribed provincial priority, the Mayor may propose the by-law to Council and require Council to consider and vote on the proposed by-law a matter at a meeting.
